The first meeting regarding the formation of a Short Mat Bowls Club as part of Winterbourne Community Association took place in November 1989. It was fortunate that there were already plans in hand to build a Badminton Hall at the Centre, which would be big enough for 3 mats for Short Mat Bowls.
The Sports Hall was finally ready and in use in June 1991. In August it was temporarily closed as the floor was deemed not level and had to be relaid.
Winterbourne SMBC has had at least 2 teams in the Bristol and District League since its inception in 1990. In 1993 Avon County Short Mat Bowls Association was formed and the Club has had members on their committee and members playing for the County in the Inter County Competitions in every year.
Our membership ranges from 90+ to low 30's. Because of this it was decided to buy electric rollers to replace the hand cranked ones we had been using. Our application for a Lottery Grant was successful and with the £10,000 awarded we are now the proud possessors of 2 Electrowinds, one for three mats and one for two.
The Club caters for both competitive and social bowling. New members are always welcome, see contact details. You may have a free taster session, and pay for a further 3 sessions before deciding whether you wish to join. We have woods you may borrow, and tuition and advice will be given.
